French as a Second Language

Join Algonquin College’s French as a Second Language (FSL) program to develop the language skills you need to communicate effectively in every day and professional situations.

Our FSL program is designed to help you reach your language goals, whether you are new to the language or need to improve your proficiency. Led by experienced and engaging instructors, our learning program and activities focus on practical real-life situations to help you gain fluency in personal and professional environments. You will also take regular quizzes and assessments to monitor your progress and abilities.

How To Register

For individuals, our courses are delivered online, pay-as-you-go, with most courses running in six-week cycles with two classes per week, from beginner to advanced levels (CEFR A1, A2, B1 and B2 corresponding to Government of Canada levels X, A, B and C). Dedicated Group Training

We also offer dedicated group training for the preparation of the Public Service Commission Oral B or Oral C Second Language Evaluation.

NOTE: If you register in a course that you find too challenging, contact us to arrange a transfer to a different level. Please note that transfer requests can be accommodated after completing no more than two classes within the current session.

Courses

FSL Beginner 1

Get started on your French as a Second Language journey with this introductory course.

FSL Beginner 2

In this second level course, learn to describe and react to different situations in real life using present, past, and future tenses.

FSL Elementary 1

Develop your abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking French through active participation in a wide range of communication activities.

FSL Elementary 2

Broaden your ability to communicate in the past, present and future tenses. The learning activities in this course focus on comparing habits and activities, giving reasons and justifying actions.

FSL Intermediate 1

Develop your French communication in professional situations, discussing and comparing present and past experiences, express your opinions along with conditions and hypotheses.

FSL Intermediate 2

Practice all communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to gain more grammatical control in complex sentences used to augment and reason on complex or unfamiliar topics.

FSL Advanced 1

This advanced level course focuses on discussing workplace and societal issues to study complex sentences in context.

FSL Advanced 2

This advanced course explores workplace and social issues through debates and discussions, encouraging authentic expression of complex ideas with advanced language skills.

Second Language Evaluation (SLE) Preparation Oral B

Increase your ability to express yourself in the present, past and future for your Level B Second Language Evaluation exam.

Second Language Evaluation (SLE) Preparation Oral C

Increase your ability to express yourself in the present, past and future for your Level C Second Language Evaluation exam.
