About This Course

Introduction 

This course focuses on helping students develop the language skills needed to handle common personal and professional interactions, including discussing work and daily activities, experiences, plans, opinions, and preferences.

Learning outcomes: What you’ll learn 

1. Exchange information in routine professional situations

  • Present your professional background, your skills and your qualities
  • Describe your work environment and your tasks
  • Understand simple work guidelines

2. Express yourself about present activities, past events or experiences and future plans

  • Describe a typical day at work and at home
  • Recount past events, experiences and travels
  • Make plans and handle invitations

3. Express opinions and preferences

  • Talk about activities and hobbies
  • Ask for and give advice
  • Express your opinion by comparing your preferences

4. Use common grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate language in context

  • Use present, past, and future forms correctly (present, passé composé, near future, simple future)
  • Expand common vocabulary in daily life and social situations e.g. health issues or recipes
  • Express yourself more clearly and succinctly by using complex grammatical concepts in context, e.g. relative pronouns, direct and indirect pronouns, and possessive adjectives or adverbs

Evaluation 

This course is not graded. Students who attend at least 80% of classes (10 of 12 sessions, or 25 of 30 course hours) and actively participate will receive a Statement of Achievement from Algonquin College Online & Professional Training.

Important note on learning pace 

Language learning is not one-size-fits-all:

  • Learners progress at different speeds depending on experience, learning style, and practice time
  • Not all learners begin with the same aptitudes or confidence levels
  • Some learners may need additional practice, review, or exposure to fully achieve these outcomes

The learning outcomes describe what is possible by the end of each course, but reaching them may require extra time, repetition, and real-world practice.

Who Should Attend

Prerequisites

You should enroll in this course if:

  • you have completed French Beginner Level 2 (Pre-A) in the past 12 months

OR

  • you received a 20% to 29% score on the placement test

Who should attend

This course is for anyone looking to improve their language skills for personal or professional reasons. This includes:

  • Government employees seeking to enhance their French language proficiency ahead of the Public Service Commission SLE (Second Language Evaluation) to reach level A
  • Anyone practicing for an official French language test for CEFR level A2
  • Anyone who meets the prerequisites

What You’ll Learn

Course Materials and Fees

Students are encouraged to purchase a hard copy or non-printable digital copy of Shaum’s Outline of French Grammar, Seventh Edition, which is used in all French as a Second Language courses.

Please note that our FSL courses are not included in the Government of Canada Standing Offer discount.
