About This Course

Introduction

In this course, students engage in conversations and debates about workplace and societal issues, using advanced French to express complex ideas, opinions, and arguments with greater accuracy and sophistication.

Learning outcomes: What you’ll learn

1. Discuss Complex Workplace and Social Issues with Confidence

  • Discuss consumer habits, personal finances, and economic issues
  • Analyze workplace well-being, including what contributes to job satisfaction
  • Debate social trends, values, ethics, and changing professional expectations

2. Express and Support Sophisticated Opinions and Ideas

  • Explain and defend your opinions during conversations and debates
  • Express feelings, emotions, and personal perspectives with nuance and precision
  • Discuss hypothetical situations, possibilities, and consequences using advanced language structures

3. Engage Critically with News and Current Events

  • Report and discuss local, national, and international news stories
  • Evaluate information critically and distinguish between reliable information and fake news
  • Expand your vocabulary and improve language accuracy through analysis of authentic media content

4. Communicate About Specialized Topics Using Advanced French

  • Discuss scientific, medical, and technological developments and innovations
  • Talk about legal issues, justice, and notable judicial cases
  • Use specialized vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and advanced language structures more accurately and naturally

Evaluation

This course is not graded. Students who attend at least 80% of classes (10 of 12 sessions, or 25 of 30 course hours) and actively participate will receive a Statement of Achievement from Algonquin College Online & Professional Training.

Important note on learning pace

Language learning is not one-size-fits-all: 

  • Learners progress at different speeds depending on experience, learning style, and practice time
  • Not all learners begin with the same aptitudes or confidence levels
  • Some learners may need additional practice, review, or exposure to fully achieve these outcomes

The learning outcomes describe what is possible by the end of each course, but reaching them may require extra time, repetition, and real-world practice.

Who Should Attend

Prerequisites

You should enroll in this course if:

  • you have completed French Proficient Level 1 (C) in the past 12 months

OR

  • you received a 70% to 79% score on the placement test

Who should attend

This course is for anyone looking to improve their language skills for personal or professional reasons. This includes: 

  • Government employees seeking to enhance their French language proficiency ahead of the Public Service Commission SLE (Second Language Evaluation) to reach level C
  • Anyone practicing for an official French language test for CEFR level B2
  • Anyone who meets the prerequisites

What You’ll Learn

Course Materials and Fees

Students are encouraged to purchase a hard copy or non-printable digital copy of Shaum’s Outline of French Grammar, Seventh Edition, which is used in all French as a Second Language courses.

Please note that our FSL courses are not included in the Government of Canada Standing Offer discount.
