About This Course

Introduction 

In this course, you will build confidence using French in real-life situations. You will learn to describe people and places, talk about family and traditions, share past experiences, and speak about present activities and future plans.

Learning outcomes: What you’ll learn

1. Describe people, places, and experiences 

• Describe people: clothing, accessories and personality 
• Use adjectives to characterize someone 
• Talk about houses, apartments, and office spaces 
• Identify furnishings and equipment 

2. Talk about family, relationships, and life events 

• Describe relationships between people, misunderstandings and conflicts 
• Describe your family 
• Talk about different stages of life and recount past events (e.g., family stories, conflicts) 

3. Discuss traditions, travel, and housing 

• Present a country, a city: customs, traditions, and holidays 
• Express obligation, talk about what is authorized or forbidden 

4. Narrate past events and express future plans 

• Express time and duration 
• Recount past events and discuss future projects; use present, past (passé composé, imparfait) and future forms 

5. Use a range of elementary grammatical structures to communicate effectively 

• Communicate in past, present, and future tenses 
• Compare habits and activities; use comparisons (comparative/superlative) 
• Give reasons and justify actions 
• Use simple relative pronouns and prepositions appropriately 

Evaluation 

This course is not graded. Students who attend at least 80% of classes (10 of 12 sessions, or 25 of 30 course hours) and actively participate will receive a Statement of Achievement from Algonquin College Online & Professional Training.

Important note on learning pace 

Language learning is not one-size-fits-all: 

• Learners progress at different speeds depending on experience, learning style, and practice time
• Not all learners begin with the same aptitudes or confidence levels
• Some learners may need additional practice, review, or exposure to fully achieve these outcomes

The learning outcomes describe what is possible by the end of each course, but reaching them may require extra time, repetition, and real-world practice.
