About This Course

Introduction

Learn to discuss and compare experiences, express and justify opinions, describe work-related topics, recount past events, and communicate more confidently in French using a range of intermediate grammar structures in this course.

Learning outcomes: What you’ll learn

1. Describe your lifestyle

  • Discuss daily habits, shopping, and technology
  • Discuss work-life balance and everyday activities

2. Communicate effectively at work, including in meetings and job-related conversations

  • Describe and compare professional skills, workspaces and working environments
  • Participate in and discuss meetings in French
  • Express and justify opinions on workplace and everyday topics

3. Talk about past trips, activities, and personal experiences

  • Describe events in the past and explain relationships between past events
  • Discuss tourism, travel experiences, sports, and hobbies

4. Describe and compare people, experiences, and ideas.

  • Express likes, dislikes, and preferences
  • Give opinions on arts and cultural topics
  • Report and summarize what another person has said

Evaluation

This course is not graded. Students who attend at least 80% of classes (10 of 12 sessions, or 25 of 30 course hours) and actively participate will receive a Statement of Achievement from Algonquin College Online & Professional Training.

Important note on learning pace 

Language learning is not one-size-fits-all:

  • Learners progress at different speeds depending on experience, learning style, and practice time
  • Not all learners begin with the same aptitudes or confidence levels
  • Some learners may need additional practice, review, or exposure to fully achieve these outcomes

The learning outcomes describe what is possible by the end of each course, but reaching them may require extra time, repetition, and real-world practice.

Prerequisites

You should enroll in this course if:

  • you have completed French Intermediate Level 2 (A) in the past 12 months

OR

  • you received a 40% to 49% score on the placement test

Who should attend

This course is for anyone looking to improve their language skills for personal or professional reasons. This includes:

  • Government employees seeking to enhance their French language proficiency ahead of the Public Service Commission SLE (Second Language Evaluation) to reach level B
  • Anyone practicing for an official French language test for CEFR level B1
  • Anyone who meets the prerequisites

What You’ll Learn

Course Materials and Fees

Students are encouraged to purchase a hard copy or non-printable digital copy of Shaum’s Outline of French Grammar, Seventh Edition, which is used in all French as a Second Language courses.

Please note that our FSL courses are not included in the Government of Canada Standing Offer discount.
