About This Course

The HCRA Competency Exams are meant for those who have significant experience in the construction industry or subject matter expertise. You have three attempts to pass this exam, and if you are unsuccessful, you must enrol in the course.

This exam was developed to reflect the corresponding course content, which aligns with HCRA’s competency requirements for specific subject areas. This is a proctored, closed-book exam in a multiple-choice, true/false and multiple-answer format. You will have 60 days to complete this assessment from the date of enrollment.

You must bring a copy of the 2024 Building Code Compendium to this open-book exam. You can request a free digital PDF copy here

 

Areas of Assessment

  • Purpose and role of the 2024 Building Code Compendium
  • Understanding what the Building Codes govern
  • Building Code requirements relating to:
    • Soil-bearing capacity and problematic soil conditions
    • Structural materials and methods of assembly to reduce damage from
    • movement
    • The building envelope, keeping weather out and resolving simple issues
    • Sound transmission into residential units and resolving simple problems 
    • Heating and ventilation systems controlling indoor air quality
    • Septic systems principles, design and operation
    • Installation of interior finishes

Please note that the cost of the HCRA Exam includes access to the examination only. To better prepare for the exam and receive supporting course materials we recommend that you register for and attend the respective HCRA-approved course HCRA: Building Codes in Ontario.
